Annual Report FY 2024

Hyde School Leadership

Letter from Dana McAvity, Board Chair

It has been my privilege to serve as Chair of the Hyde School Board of Governors since June 2020. Hyde School has been at the forefront of character education for almost 60 years and is more relevant today than ever. None of our growth would be possible without the commitment of the Hyde community. Firstly, I would like to thank my fellow Governors, who have stepped forward with their time, talents, and financial resources. Because of them, Hyde has had the stability and flexibility to meet the challenges and take advantage of opportunities this past year.

Letter from Laura Gauld '76 P'08 '10, Head of School

Looking back on last year fills me with pride knowing how deeply our students evolved with passion and resilience. Their fierce determination was inspiring and embodies the essence of Hyde. Early in the year, our community established a strong foundation of openness through weekly School Meetings centered around the Five Words. The Class of 2024 bonded more closely through the months, and became fully engaged in the spring Senior Curriculum process. Powerful graduation speeches left a lasting impression, and we were all reminded of the transformation that happens on our beautiful campus.

Letter from Will Bridgeo, Director of Development

I am happy to report that Hyde has enjoyed a successful fundraising year in 2024! Thanks to the generosity of so many of you, Hyde is delivering in a big way for its students and families.

There have been many highlights this year, most notably, the comprehensive renovation of the Outdoor Athletics Complex. This $2.5 million project was completed at the end of August and includes the installation of a new track and state-of-the-art turf playing surface, refurbished locker room and restroom facilities, an outdoor family viewing pavilion, and a new scoreboard.

Sustaining Hyde's Mission through Scholarship Support

Notes from Scholarship Recipients

I appreciate the funding provided to me for my 2023-2024 school year. I was able to pursue my love for academics and for soccer. My family and I are truly grateful for the opportunity.

          —Joey, Irving Family Scholar

Being at Hyde gave me the opportunity to be someone that I didn’t know I could be. I became a leader in the community. Specifically, I took on the role of dorm leader being responsible for the underclassmen which helped to really mold me as a young man.

         —Tyshawn, D’Amato Family Scholar

As Hyde marches toward its 60th year of character education, we are proud to acknowledge the establishment of named scholarship funds that provide opportunities for students from all walks of life to enrich our student community.

Most older boarding schools benefit from well-established funds that supplement the school’s financial aid. Seventeen years ago, Joey Gauld set out to begin this tradition with the Blanche Gauld Scholarship Fund. Every year, he and his family contributed to the fund and slowly it began to grow and now endows a student’s tuition each year. After his passing, Malcolm, Laurie and Gigi added their father’s name to the fund to honor both of their parents.

The von Seldeneck family followed Joey’s example and have supported a student each year for the last 7 years. The efforts of these two families helped us begin to develop some momentum and we are just beginning!

Scholarships at Hyde enrich us all in so many ways. We thank the following families whose contributions are recognized in the Giving Circles section. On behalf of the students and families whose lives you have touched, we extend our deepest gratitude for your continued belief in the Hyde mission!

ALUMNI & HAPA ENGAGEMENT THROUGH THE YEAR

In March, Linda Hothem P ‘08, P ‘09 and Aaron Hothem ’08 hosted a Hyde golf event at their club in Miami with 20 Hyde golfers attending. Plans are in the works for the next golf gathering.

We held our first Alumni/HAPA Retreat June 27-30 on campus with 11 people. The Theme Refresh, Renew, Reconnect focused on the joys and challenges of navigating life’s transitions. This group came together through a series of activities, and we each took a look at where we are in our lives, where we were headed and gained some insight into how to move forward. As one participant commented, I never attended a two-day retreat that had as much impact on my life journey…If you want to experience meaningful time for introspection in a supportive environment, gain closure on past experiences and identify steps to a path forward, this is the seminar for you.

Mike Cannon '11 hosted a few faculty and 10 Hyde students in NYC at Merrill Lynch and Bank of America headquarters for an interactive workshop on finance and planning.

Tony Rea ’69, Sr. Strategist with Dell Technologies, met with faculty and students about innovations with Artificial Intelligence and is assisting AI’s integration with our curriculum.

Nelson Arnstein '71 funded safety glasses for the community for the Solar Eclipse.

Sarah Carlin '80 held a three-day campus workshop for students on Mindfulness in April.

We’re excited about the many different ways Alumni and HAPA have engaged with the School and with each other. Here are some of the highlights from the past year:

30 Day Challenge
On May 1st we launched the first 30-Day Alumni Challenge. We reached our goals of raising $50,000 from 100 donors with gifts ranging from $25 to $10,000. The event ignited lots of love and fun memories with supporters posting pictures and comments. Let’s see what we can do in 2025!

Diploma Process Discussions
We hosted several Zooms to discuss the Hyde Diploma process. The discussions generated excellent feedback and insight from alumni and improvements for the Class of 2024 were implemented. The Diploma process is now more accessible for alums.

We are grateful to everyone for bringing your energy to these events and for being an ambassador for Hyde’s mission; “Develop Character to Discover Unique Potential”. We appreciate hearing from you and we welcome your ideas and involvement. Stay tuned for information from the Alumni Council about upcoming projects and events and we hope to see you at the 60th Celebration June 12-14, 2026.
Board of Governors Welcomes Mark Walters '77

The Hyde Board of Governors is honored to welcome alumnus Mark Walters, who joined the Board last June. Mark is not only passionately devoted to Hyde School’s mission, but he also brings 40 years of business experience in finance, problem solving, government issues and legal strategizing with him. He has a deep admiration for Joe Gauld’s vision to help young people and their families build character and has personally experienced the power of the Five Words when dealing with clients and employees. We look forward to having Mark’s enthusiasm and many skills to help the Hyde Board support Hyde School going forward.
