Annual Report FY 2023

Hyde School Leadership

Letter from Laura Gauld '76 P'08 '10, Head of School

As I look back on the year, I am incredibly proud of our students for digging deep into the Hyde experience and moving forward with grit and resilience. Our community set the tone early in the fall during School Meetings designed around the Five Words. These weekly sessions throughout the year were enriched by deep sharing, courage, vulnerability and honest communication. The Class of 2023 led the underclassmen well and grew stronger as a collective. Graduation speeches inspired our community and we are excited to see where our graduates’ paths lead.

Letter from Will Bridgeo, Director of Development

In June, I arrived at Hyde to report for my first day on the job. It was unlike any first day of work I have had before. The entire Hyde faculty and staff were gathered in the mansion preparing to spend the day cleaning and fixing up the campus together. It was all hands-on deck and spirits were high. I immediately knew I was in the right place.

The Discovery Process

During the 2022-23 year, the Hyde Institute was focused on two objectives:
  • Working with the inaugural cohort of school districts utilizing the Discovery Process found us in regular contact with public, private, and public charter schools spread across six states.
  • Developing our marketing and sales strategy for the recruitment of additional schools.
The latter objective engaged our energies on a number of fronts:
  • Culture by Design - The Discovery Process as a New Way for Schools was published in June (2023) by Rowman Littlefield publishers.
  • The completion of a marketing research study by Hanover Research.
  • We are currently in the midst of a lead generated cold-calling sales strategy with VSA Prospecting.
  • Hyde Institute Executive Director Malcolm Gauld presented at conferences in PA and MA, and will do so at the PA Assoc. of Charter School in October. In addition, he has  applied to present at other national conferences.
  • Malcolm was interviewed for Maine 207, a popular news show produced by Portland’s NBC affiliate.
  • The Hyde Institute has launched an individual sales option, designed for the teacher trapped in a school system unlikely to adopt the program but open to SEL teaching as well as the parent who wants to follow the program their child is engaged in.
The Hyde Institute has been most challenged by getting in front of public school decision-makers, and this is our biggest challenge for the year ahead. It has led us to double down on our efforts with charter school management organizations (CMOs) as well as private schools. Along with this effort, we will submit a strategic plan for the Hyde Institute during the coming year.
