Hyde School to Host 26th Annual James Roman Basketball Tournament Invitational

The 26th annual James Roman Basketball Tournament Invitational will be held December 9 and 10 and will feature match-ups between the boys teams of Hyde-Bath, Hyde-Woodstock, Kents Hill, and St. Thomas More schools. The tournament is held in memory of James Tomas Roman, a student athlete who passed away suddenly during a pickup game of basketball at Hyde School in February of 1988.

James enrolled at Hyde during the summer of 1986. After completing the Summer Challenge Program, the freshman went on to perform at honors level in his academic courses and received the distinguished Headmaster’s Commendation both semesters.

In athletics, James was equally hard-working and impressive. He is remembered by many for his performance during a game at the Augusta Civic Center during the 1988 Western Maine Class B, C, and D Basketball Tournament where he fired two straight 15-foot shots that kept Hyde in the game against Valley High School of Bingham. Hyde went on to win in overtime 80-78.

Hyde’s Assistant Head of School Rich Truluck says that he is excited for the tournament, sharing that “Even though it has been 29 years since James passed, his spirit still lives on in the tournament. This event has proven itself to be more than an opportunity for those who knew James to gather together to honor him, and has become something much larger. The tournament represents the investment in people and sportsmanship that James had in life. We look forward, as always, to sharing this with the schools who visit us.”

This year’s tournament will start on December 9 at 5:30 PM with a ceremony dedicated to James, at which his jersey will be saluted and remarks will be made by Hyde administrators. His jersey sports the number 14—a number which is now retired at Hyde.

Friday at 5:30 PM St. Thomas More will play Kents Hill, and Hyde-Bath will play Hyde-Woodstock at 7:00 PM. The next morning starting at 10 AM the Consolation Game is scheduled and at 11:30 AM the Championship Game will be played.

At the conclusion of the tournament The James Roman Award will be awarded in recognition of good sportsmanship.
