Hyde – 1
Kents Hill – 2
Hyde returned to MAISAD play on Saturday against the Huskies of Kents Hill. It was their first meeting of the season on the Alfond turf in Readfield. It was also the first time the Wolfpack started a match at full strength, with all players returning from injury. Though Kents Hill outshot Hyde the match was evenly played with both teams possessing the ball and making threatening attacks on goal. Ten minutes in, the Huskies were awarded a direct kick just outside the Hyde box. They converted it into a goal on a beautiful strike that grazed the far post upper 90, catching Alice Yokabaskas ’19 off guard. However, the error did not deter her and she went on to play an outstanding game in net making several big saves. Determined to equalize, the Wolfpack pressed. 6 minutes later, Hyde scored when Bailey Kent ’18 struck a shot inside the box, her first of the season. Strikers Haley Baustert ’18 and Lauren Leask ’18 continued to press but were unable to shake the Huskie’s defense. On the other end of the field, defenders Marlena DeCastro ‘18 and Merrill Truluck ’18 did an outstanding job dismantling the Kents Hill offense. Neither team was able to score and first half ended 1-1.
It looked to be anyone’s game as the score remained tied for the first 14 minutes of the second half. Hyde’s midfield worked hard along with an excellent game by striker Elena Waldstein ’18. Hyde found a welcomed addition in Francesca Zenker ’19 who worked well with Eliza Burroughs ’18 to win balls and counter. Kents Hill finally broke the tie when they capitalized on a defensive scramble in front of the net. The remaining 26 minutes were hard fought. Ingrid Schroeter ’19 worked incredibly hard trying to find another equalizer but ultimately ran out of time. The teams will meet again in a few weeks on Hyde’s home turf.
