Hyde Wolfpack Cross Country travelled to Gould Academy on Saturday, September 16th for their first meet of the season. It was sunny, hot (81 degrees), and humid, making the race quite challenging despite the relatively flat course.
In the boys race, nerves were high as none of the athletes knew much of what to expect. A great effort from all of our runners allowed us to clinch first place in our first meet. A great way to start the season. Our scoring runners were Jose Bay-Cheng ’19 scoring 2 points with a time of 20:05, Jeremiah Wright ’18 scoring 4 points with a time of 20:38, Edwin Ezedonmwen ’18 scoring six points with a time of 20:42, Parris Thompson ’18 scoring nine points with a time of 23:5, and Evan Hutchinson ’21 scoring 10 points with a time of 24:24.
In the girls race, we were only able to enter 3 runners which made us unable to score points as a team. However, all three runners put in an admirable effort with Zakiiyah Pulliam-Holmes ’20 pushing hard and setting a benchmark for her future races. The other two Wolfpack runners, Rosalynn Bragg ’19 and Sunday Maker ’18, encountered a runner from another team suffering from severe muscle cramping. They stopped mid-race and assisted this runner for a significant distance until the athletic trainer arrived on the scene with a vehicle. This was an incredible act of sportsmanship and altruism and we could not be more proud to have these two as part of our team!
After setting a tone of great sportsmanship and the highest effort, we look forward to continued improvement in our times over the season. Our next meet is a huge invitational at Derryfield Park in Manchester, NH on Saturday, September 23rd.
