Hyde – 7
Wiscasset – 0
It was a beautiful, sunny day on the Hyde turf as the Girls Varsity Soccer team gathered to open their season with a scrimmage against Wiscasset High School. The team had a full week of high paced practices and were more than ready to take the field. The opening minutes saw play on both sides of mid-field as the Wolfpack found their legs and settled in to their game. Scoring began 11 minutes in with senior captain Elena Waldstein ’18 on an unassisted breakaway that she skillfully played low past the keeper. Four minutes later she would repeat the finish on a beautiful through ball assist from Bailey Kent ’18 making the score 2-0. From there the Hyde girls dominated play. Two more goals were notched before the close of the first half by captains Eliza Burroughs ’18 and Lauren Leask ’18. Wiscasset managed just one shot on goal which junior goalkeeper Alice Yokabaskas ’19 saved brilliantly with an aggressive diving attack off her goal line.
The second half was an exercise of composure and possession. Elena Waldstein ’18 would find her hat trick on a 25-yard breakaway to close her scoring. Alice Yokabaskas ’19 and Claudia Salhany ’18 both found themselves with a loose ball in front of the net making the final score 7-0. While Wiscasset was clearly outmatched on the day, both teams played respectfully with solid effort. The Wolfpack defense was marshaled by newcomer Ingrid Schroeter ’19 and Madison Hughes ’20 at center backs. The team now digs in to prepare for their MAISAD opener against Gould Academy.
