Hyde School: 9 Hebron Academy: 12
On Friday, the Boys Varsity Lacrosse team traveled to Hebron Academy to play the Lumberjacks for the second time in the 2017 season. The Phoenix were looking to avenge an earlier 14-7 loss, and the game was played in rainy and muddy conditions on natural grass.
Hyde came out of the gates playing strong on both ends of the field, and moved the ball well en route to a quick 2-0 lead. Hebron would refuse to go down easily, and thanks to stellar faceoff play, kept themselves in it throughout the opening frame, leading to a 4-3 advantage for the Phoenix moving into the second quarter. The second frame would prove the Phoenix’s undoing, as the Lumberjacks took advantage of sloppy defensive play and extra man opportunities to pull away for a 9-5 halftime lead, netting their ninth goal at the buzzer.
The third quarter was once again Hebron controlled, as the Jacks kept rolling to a 12-6 advantage. However, as they often have this season, Hyde fought until the very end, scoring the game’s final three goals to pull to the eventual 12-9 outcome.
Hyde’s downfall was time of possession, skewed thanks to Hebron’s superior groundball play and domination at the faceoff x. Despite playing the majority of the game in their own end, the defense played strong the whole game, anchored by keeper McGehee Porter ‘17 (21 saves), Stephen Waddill ‘17, and Stephen O’Brien ‘18.
Offensively, the Phoenix were paced once more by Captain Reese Norton ‘17 (4g, 3a), with Matt Byron ‘20 (3g, 1a) playing his best game this season. Other strong play came from Max Hewitt ‘18, Greg Kidger ‘17 (1g), and Stratton Karangelan ‘19 (1g).
The Phoenix will travel to Tilton, New Hampshire to play Tilton Academy on Wednesday, May 10th for their final out-of-conference game of the 2017 season, before setting their sights on their final MAISAD games and the conference tournament.
