Hyde School: 9 Gould Academy: 8 (OT)
On Saturday, the Boys Varsity Lacrosse team traveled to Bethel, Maine to take on the Gould Academy Huskies for their tenth game of the season, and third of their MAISAD schedule. The game was played on Gould’s turf in sunny and warm weather.
While Hyde started quick and notched the first goal of the game, Gould would largely control the first half, jumping out to a 6-3 lead over the first two frames. Playing in front of their families, the Huskies took advantage of their home field, controlling the pace of the game and possessing the ball on offense for long stretches. While the Phoenix defense played a great game, they struggled in the first half, playing with only two subs and growing tired early.
The Phoenix came alive in the second half, battling back to close the gap, as they often have of late. Thanks largely to strong defensive play by Jared Durkin ‘18, Parker Ward ‘17, Stephen O’Brien ‘18 and another outstanding performance by net minder McGehee Porter ‘17 (20 saves), the Phoenix kept themselves within striking distance for the whole game.
The Phoenix have shown multiple times this season that they’re capable of mounting dramatic comebacks, and this game they finally completed one. Goalscorers included Captain Greg Kidger ‘17 (2g, 1a) and Stratton Karangelan ‘19 (1g), while Nick Simon ‘20 (2g) continued his impressive freshman season. Offensively, Hyde turned once again to standout midfielder Reese Norton ‘17 (game-high 4g, 2a) down the stretch as he seemingly turned the tides with the ball in his stick, ultimately netting the game winner only 12 seconds into the overtime period.
The Phoenix have a rare period of rest this week before back-to-back games this weekend. On Friday the 5th, they travel to Hebron to take on the Lumberjacks in a rematch of Hyde’s 14-7 loss earlier in the season.
