The Wolfpack squared off against Avon Old Farms yesterday on a rainy &damp; cold afternoon that had the makings of an intense battle. Avon got out to an early 1-0 but the Wolfpack battled back with an amazing feed from Cooper Felt ’19 to Spencer Levin ’17 to tie the score at 1-1. Hyde wasted little time as attack man and leading scorer, Ian White’18 found the back of the net to put Hyde ahead, 2-1. Unfortunately, Hyde struggled to possess the ball and Avon spent the majority of the first half on the offensive end. The Hyde defense was led by Ben Damschroder’ 17 and Nic Loris ’18 who helped keep the Avon attack from advancing. Goalie Ian Cooke ’18 was superb in stopping shot after shot to take us into halftime down 3-2.
Senior face-off wizard Alex Sobel ’18 controlled the opening draw of the second half and hit Levin for his second goal of the afternoon. Avon battled back and scored on 3 consecutive possessions to put them ahead going into the final quarter 6-3. Thanks to amazing goalie play by Cooke, Hyde was able to stop numerous attempts which resulted in a goal from mid-fielder Brooks Doll ’17 and another nifty goal from Robert Carter ’17 on the power play. With two minutes to play, the Wolfpack were within striking distance but some costly turnovers put the game out of reach. The final score – 7- 5 in favor of Avon Old Farms. In my twenty-one years of coaching, I have never seen a Hyde goalie have a more gutsy performance than what Ian Cooke displayed…. He had 27 saves and was the glue that held us together. Stay tuned!!
