Hyde School: 11 Cheverus: 12
The Phoenix Boys Varsity Lacrosse team headed down to the turf yesterday to play their fourth game of the 2017 season against the visiting Cheverus Stags. A new addition to the schedule, Cheverus proved a tough opponent as the Hyde team put together their best performance of the young season. The game was played in sunny and warm weather on Hyde’s turf.
The Phoenix played well in the first half, but made some defensive errors that allowed for some good looks for the Stags. Offensively, Hyde went through cold spells against a zone look from Cheverus, a new defensive concept that requires a much different offensive philosophy. While Hyde played well and stayed within striking distance for much of the first two frames, they fell behind by a few to trail 9-6 at the half.
The second half was all Phoenix as Hyde took control of the game. Continuing with his early success, Reese Norton ‘17 (season-high 7g) exploded in the second half, scoring on some remarkable plays to keep the Phoenix charging back from behind. Goalie McGehee Porter ‘17 (7 second-half saves) made his season debut at halftime and limited the Stags to just 3 second-half goals. Ultimately, the Phoenix were fighting the clock as the scored the game’s final 3 goals and Greg Kidger ‘17 rang a shot off the goalpost with 10 seconds remaining. Despite the 12-11 loss, the team left the game with their heads high, finally feeling that they showed what they were capable of on the field.
Other scoring came from Michael Muench ‘17 (2g) in his best game of the season, as well as Greg Kidger ‘17 (1g), Keith Scafe ‘17 (1g), and Stratton Karangelan ‘19 (3a). Other notable play came from Zach Hambleton ‘17, Jason Filios ‘17, Dylan Budd ‘17, and David Hentnick ‘17. The Phoenix have a quick turn around in their return to action today, as they open up MAISAD play against the Hebron Academy Lumberjacks in a rematch of last year’s Conference Championship loss. The game will be on Hyde’s turf at 4:00pm.
