Tough Loss to Lewiston for Phoenix Boys Lax, 5-11

Hyde School: 5 Lewiston: 11

Last Saturday, the Boys Varsity Lacrosse team traveled down to the Hyde turf to play the visiting Lewiston Blue Devils. The game was a rematch of last year’s 7-5 Hyde win, and was played under sunny skies and mild weather.

The game got off to a quick start, with Reese Norton ‘17 (2g) scoring the first goal just a minute into the contest. The first half would be a back-and-forth affair, with Hyde staying in it despite consistent turnovers on the offensive end and costly penalties on the defensive end. Despite the sloppy play, Hyde was in the game at intermission, only trailing by one goal.

The second half is where the Phoenix once again faltered, as the Devils began to capitalize on Hyde errors. With a mix of sloppy offensive play and building defensive frustration, Lewiston began to pull away. Once again, Hyde failed to keep their heads in the game and let the game slip away from them en route to the 11-5 final score.

Goals came from Norton, newcomer Matt Byron ‘20 (2g), and Stratton Karangelan (1g), while keeper Eli Widener ‘20 (7 saves) kept the defense in it for much of the game. Notable play at the faceoff x came from rookie players Thomas Avant ‘18 and Jared Durkin ‘18, as well as strong defense from Scott O’Brien ‘17 and versatile play from Keith Scafe ‘17.

There was a lot to take away from this loss as the Phoenix look to continue to improve their play before their MAISAD play opens.
