Hyde School: 11 Fryeburg Academy: 9
Boys Varsirty Lacrosse headed down to the turf on Monday, looking to collect its first win of the 2017 season against the visiting Fryeburg Academy Raiders. The game was played under sunny and warm skies.
Coming off of a tough loss only a few days before and missing some seniors for the game, the energy of the team left a lot to be desired for the majority of the game. The team committed a host of mental errors and turned the ball over frequently, often failing to get into the offensive rhythm that they’ve shown over the last couple weeks of practice.
The game saw a lot of back-and-forth action, with the Raiders striking first before Hyde took an advantage for the majority of the first half. Coming out of the halftime intermission, Fryeburg took advantage of strong faceoff play and sloppy possessions by the Hyde offense to pull ahead 9-7 with seven minutes remaining in the game. However, the Phoenix showed resolve at the end of the game, scoring the game’s final four goals en route to a 11-9 final score. While the team didn’t give its strongest effort throughout the course of the 48 minutes, it found a way to pull out the win in the end.
Leading the way for the Phoenix once again was Reese Norton ‘17 (game-high 5g, 1a), with Greg Kidger ‘17 and James Kirby ‘17 contributing two goals and an assist apiece and Michael Muench ‘17 and Matt Byron ‘20 each chipping in a goal. Notable play on the defensive side of the ball came from Sophomore netminder Eli Widener (13 saves) and close defenders Parker Ward ‘17, Scott O’Brien ‘17, and Tyler Friedlander ‘18.
The Phoenix return to action today at home against visiting North Yarmouth Academy in a rematch of last year’s 7-1 Hyde win. The game will be played at 4:00pm on the Hyde turf.
