Pomfret School: 24
The Hyde-Woodstock varsity wrestling team faced off today against our nearby rival, Pomfret School. We have had some combined practices over the past month which had given us a sense that this would be a close competition. Both Pomfret and Hyde shared similar deficits in their line-ups and therefore forfeits did not become an issue for either team. We had matches set at the 145, 152, 160, 170, and 220 weight classes. Of these matches, the Wolfpack would earn pins at the 145 and 220 classes thanks to the hard work by Tony Mao ’17 and Ben Damschroder ’17. Even though we would only win 2 out of the 3 matches, we earned an additional six points from a forfeit which tied the score at 24-24 by the end. Using the rule book, it was determined that Hyde would be awarded an additional point since we had earned more first take downs than Pomfret. This means that in our matches, our wrestlers scored the first two points in 3 out of 5 of the matches. Although most matches were won by whomever earned the first take down, it would be Tom Yao ’19 who would win this tie breaker for us in the end. He had a great defensive move in the first seconds of his match which put him in control and earned him the take down. This is an example of how everything counts in wrestling, no matter if you win or lose. Finally, we had two fun exhibition matches with Hunter Bounds ’19 at the 285lb weight class, and Autumn Condon ’17 at the 106lb weight class.
Upon our return we gathered at the victory bell to share a moment of success. We have but a few meets remaining as we enter into tournament season. This Saturday we will be heading to Lexington Christian Academy to face off against Marvelwood, Worcester, and the host school. Wish us luck!
