Hyde VW’s traveled to Deerfield Academy this past Saturday to face off in a quint-match against Andover, Exeter, Hyde-Bath, and the host school. Most of these teams are the best in the league so the Wolfpack was able to get some real experience.
Phillips Exeter Academy: 72
Our first match pitted us against the #1 team in New England. Phillips Exeter is a very strong team with several All-American wrestlers in their line-up. They nearly shut us out, but thanks to team captain Josh Angel (PG) ’17, we earned one pin. Although a tough match, it was also worth noting the effort of our other team captain Alex Sobel ’17 who lost against a tough opponent at the 160lb weight class. His opponent will be a tough obstacle during tournament season, but Alex put up one heck of a fight.
Phillips Andover Academy: 72
Our second match was against Exeter’s sister school, Andover. Another strong wrestling program meant another rough match up. This time around it was Alex Sobel ’17 who prevented a shut out with a great pin against his opponent. The rest of our team fell by pin, which means we will be working more on fighting off our backs this week in practice.
Our third match up of the day placed Hyde versus Hyde in a classic showdown of sister schools. Since both Bath and Woodstock had several holes in their line-ups, we would only have three official matches at the 145lb weight class, 220lb weight class, and 285lb weight class. Tony Mao ’17 kicked us off with a fast pin against his opponent,. Ben Damschroder ’17 would lose his match to a talented Phoenix at 220lbs. Our final match saw Josh Angel (PG) ’17 against a Bath 200lb wrestler who bumped up to fill the weight class. Josh earned a quick pin here which brought us to a tie at 30-30. In true Hyde fashion, the teams showed incredible sportsmanship and each side shook hands at the end with comradeship and friendship. It will be exciting to see what a combined Hyde team will look like in the coming year.
Deerfield Academy: 69
Our final match up of the day was against the host school, Deerfield Academy. Much like the other matches of the day, we faced an incredibly tough team with a full line-up, whereas we had 6 out of the 14 weights filled. Half of our points came from a forfeit at the 106lb weight class. Alex Sobel ’17 earned a stellar technical fall after defeating his opponent 19-4. Josh Angel (PG) ’17 had the match of the day against the #3 in New England. His match went into overtime tied at 1-1 after the third period. Josh took a great shot but his opponent slipped out and came out on top. Although a loss, Josh has continued to prove that he will be a top contender in both Class A’s and New England’s if he continues to grow this season.
The Wolfpack will have a period of rest since we do not have a match until January 25th, when we face off against Pomfret and Moses Brown. Until that time we will condition and train to prepare as the tournament season approaches.
Wish us luck!
