Hyde: 76 Kents Hill: 43
After spending the weekend on a surprise trip to Eustis, Maine ( blog coming!), the Phoenix returned to THE JOE, looking to build on late 2016 success. Focused on their 5th win in a row, the Phoenix overwhelmed visiting Kents Hill in MAISAD league play, winning 76 to 43.
Hyde started slow in the first half, scoring only 7 points in the first 5 minutes. However, the tide turned due to the play of Senior captain Miguel Prieto. Prieto stole three passes in a row and converted for layups on the other end. The Phoenix played a variety of defenses which kept the visiting Huskies off balance and the back-court of Prieto and Senior Noah West dominated the game on the glass and defensively. In our three guard system, each player can serve as a creator. Junior Edwin Ezedonmwen showed the ability to play point, tallying 4 of his 7 assists in the first half. The highlight of the half was a tough defensive stop and steal and a huge jam by West. At the half, the Phoenix held Kents Hill to only 12 points.
The second half started with 5 back to basket scores by Junior big man Christian Beeke. Beeke didn’t take a break during vacation: instead and improved diet and weightlifting have allowed him to have more of an impact inside. We are all excited about his development. Kents Hill is very well coached and they started to convert more in the second and creep back in. A nice drive by Senior ‘swiss army knife’ Khalil Depass put the game out of reach.
All 12 players on the roster played significant minutes and Junior Se Jun Kim scored his first varsity points on a corner three. Congrats, Se Jun! The Phoenix improve to 5-2 and have won 5 in a row. They play undefeated class C power Winchendon on the road, Wednesday. Should be a great test!
