Hyde 71 St Georges 40
The final week before break can be a difficult time for any team. Focus is typically lower than usual and the players ( and coaches! ) are looking forward to a well deserved break. After earning two wins at the James Roman Tournament, the Phoenix returned to practice, attempting the complete December. The first test was Saint Georges, a solid program in RI.
After an extremely long trip, the Phoenix arrived…. With 5 minutes before gametime! Luckily, Coach Pena allowed us ten more minutes and we took the floor as ready as we could be. The Phoenix started slow offensively—clearly showing the effects of the long trip. However, our Senior backcourt sparked a first half run at the 10 minute mark. Noah West put on a show, throwing down 3 impressive dunks and Miguel Prieto hit from deep/ provided some nice dishes to his teammates. The defense also was the story as St Georges only scored 15 points in the first half.
The second half featured a scoring explosion from big man Christian Beeke. Beeke demanded the ball, scoring 10 points in a row on nice entries from seniors Greg Kidger and Aman Wisdom. The Phoenix also were sparked by the return of swingman Khalil Depass. Depass had a double- double with 10 pts and 10 reb. He provided the highlight of the game late in the second with a quick crossover and a monstrous jam after a well organized set play.
The Phoenix were led by West ( 24 pts, 6 reb ), Prieto ( 18pts, 6 assists ) Beeke ( 12 pts, 10 reb, 2 blocks ) and Depass ( 10 pts, 10 reb ). We improved to 3-2 in NEPSAC play.
