Phoenix Girls Varsity Basketball Takes On Isleboro, NYA

Hyde traveled by bus and ferry to face Isleboro for their first regular season game on Friday December 9th. It was a slow first half for the Lady Phoenix although they applied a lot of pressure both on offense and defense. Hyde gained an early lead when Junior Anna Doline hit an outside jump shot and a three pointer. Going into the second quarter Hyde had a lead of 7 but Isleboro increased their offense pressure and worked the ball down low and outscored Hyde by two. Going into the locker room at halftime Hyde led 17-12.

At the start of the second half Hyde’s full court press put Isleboro on their heels. The Lady Phoenix also applied more aggressive defense causing Isleboro to turn the ball over and give Hyde the opportunity for fast breaks. As a result, Hyde pulled away and had a lead of 16 at the end of the third quarter. In the final quarter Hyde continued to pass and move the ball well on offense and patiently worked the ball around the perimeter to put the Isleboro defense off balance. In the final moment of the game with 7 seconds to go, Freshmen Madison Hughes finished off a great second half with a half court buzzer shot for three points. It was an exciting final play to a great first game of the season.

Senior Timesha Walker was the high scorer of the game with 18 points and had 5 steals. Doline added 12 points and 4 steals. Senior Emma Levensohn had 10 points and 5 steals. Senior Allie Grover had a great night of defense and also contributed 5 steals. Hyde looks to host North Yarmouth Academy for their first home game of the season on Monday December 12th.

On Monday December 12th the Lady Phoenix had their home opener against Class C opponent North Yarmouth Academy. Despite the support of the home court crowd Hyde was unable to clinch their second win.

NYA went on a quick run in the first quarter and Hyde was trailing. Once the girls settled in on offense they closed the gap but were down by 5 going into the 2nd quarter. They picked up their defense in the second quarter but NYA was able to capitalize off of turn overs to gain a lead of 9 at the half.

Hyde look to make adjustments at halftime and went into the third quarter looking to move the ball on offense and find the hoop. Solid defense and more aggressive play under the boards closed down NYA’s lead. Junior guard Anna Doline hit a key 3 pointer and Timesha Walker’17 and Emma Levensohn ’17 added a pair of jump shots back to back. In the fourth quarter however Hyde made a number of turnovers and NYA pulled ahead. Hyde had a tough time working the ball on offense to gain back the momentum they gained in the third quarter.

Each girl who stepped on the floor worked hard and put in a solid effort. Levensohn finished the night with 11 rebounds and 8 points. Walker contributed 11 steals on defense and 9 points. Doline was the high scorer of the evening with 11 points. Sophomore Alice Yokabaskas had 5 points and 6 rebounds. The girls look forward to the opportunity to work on playing together at the St. Paul Holiday Jamboree on December 14th!
