Phoenix Cross Country Reborn @ Kents Hill Meet

Attention Cross Country Enthusiasts!

This weekend at Kents Hill was an exciting one for the Hyde cross country team! Like a phoenix rising from the ashes and developing into a fantastic beast, our team was finally able to field a full scoring team after two weeks of low numbers due to injury, illness and the SATs. Our speedy squad dominated the competition, placing five runners in the top seven finishers.

Despite Kents Hill’s home course advantage, this race was all about the boys from Bath. Senior captains Demeke Geremew ’17 and Evan Davis ’17 formed a formidable 1-2 punch for Hyde, as both finished ahead of Kents Hill’s fastest racer. Demeke ran hard from the gun, opening a sizable lead within the first half mile; his lead only increased as the race progressed and by the end of 3.1 mile race, he was an astounding 47 seconds ahead of his closest competitor, finishing in a time of 17:04. Evan showed that running a full marathon just six days before the race was not enough to slow him down as he finished in the bronze medal position in 20:26.

Juniors Edwin Ezedonmwen ’18 and James Bristow ’18 worked together for the whole race, pacing each other to times of 22:09 and 22:11 respectively to place 5th and 6th overall. Both are first year runners bouncing back from injury and the whole team is excited to have them back as healthy, scoring members of the squad. Our newest runner, Juan Jenkins ’19, had been at Hyde for less than 72 hours but he suited up and represented himself and the team phenomenally. A pesky root tripped up the sophomore midway through the race, but he recovered well, finishing in 22:30, quick enough for 7th place. All five of the Hyde scorers crossed the line before Kents Hill’s second runner. Jack He ’18, Bill Li ’17 and Jack Gao ’17 rounded out the team for the day.

It was a fun day to be a coach for the Hyde team! We finally were able to score as a team after several frustrating weeks of being too shorthanded for a full lineup. This weekend was a great step toward the team goal of defending the MAISAD title that was won last year. Next week, we’ll be cruising around the Hyde mansion, traipsing through the woods, and dashing across the open fields on our home course for family weekend. We’ll see you there!

Go Phoenix, and as always, Happy Running!
