Phoenix BVS Battle Wolfpack to 0-0 Tie

Hyde School Bath: 0 – Hyde School Woodstock: 0

The Hyde Phoenix traveled to Woodstock Connecticut on Saturday to play a match with the Wolfpack of Hyde School Woodstock.  The game was played under cloudy, cool and windy weather on the Grant turf field.

The match started with the two teams mingling for a few minutes at half field.  The boys from both teams chatted and got to know each other prior to this historically unique meeting of these two teams.  The game started with little other fanfare.  Both teams came out of the gates strong, and intensely played soccer in the first half.  The Phoenix did a good job of maintaining possession early on.  Center midfielders SergeMudogo`18 and PG Zach Hambleton worked well with outside midfielders Will Duerr`18 and Jed Danforth`19 to move the ball forward to strikers Scott O’Brien`17 and Christian Beeke`18.  This offensive unit outshot the Wolfpack by a significant margin in the first half of play.  However, after 40 minutes the game was knotted at 0-0.

The Phoenix had the wind in their teeth for the second half.  This necessitated them playing the ball more consistently on the ground.  The Wolfpack had the wind on their backs and this afforded them the advantage of more easily playing balls forward, over the top of the Phoenix defenders.  However, the back four of John Garrett`17, Captain PG Dylan Budd, David Hentnick`17 and PG Brandon Nelson played exceptionally well, allowing no shots on Captain keeper Greg Kidger`17.  Meanwhile, the offensive attack, and possession game remained strong for the Phoenix.  They had numerous chances to score with both corner kicks and shots on goal.  They remained frustrated however, and were not able to find the back of the net.  The match ended in a 0-0 tie.

This was an intense and emotionally charged match.  The Bath boys won the game on the possession front, but were unable to win the match with goals scored.  This has been an ongoing challenge for the team.  In the training sessions leading up to the next match we will be working on drilling ball placement in goal scoring situations.  The next match is away with Bradford Christian Academy at 3:45 on Wednesday October 26th.
