At Hyde School
Hyde School – 2
Hebron Academy – 1
On a beautiful, sunny afternoon in Bath, Maine, the Hyde School Girls Junior Varsity Soccer Team had a phenomenal start to the season, playing MAISAD opponent Hebron Academy at home. With few subs but endless spirit, the girls played with toughness, team work, and enthusiasm to earn their first win of the season.
As the game began, the players initially struggled with the inexperience of having a team of 11 and a full field to cover. However, with hard work and composure, the team started to implement much of the skill they’ve gained in the two weeks of practice and move the ball with purpose. Hayley Bounds ‘18 and Olivia Yoon ‘18 provided great energy and inspiration in the offense, pressuring the Hebron defense and creating great forward momentum. After an unfortunate bounce of the ball in the Phoenix defense area, Hebron smartly took advantage of their opportunity, scoring first at 17:40 gone in the half. With a solid no-quit response, Hyde perfectly executed the kick off, with Madison Hughes ’20 sending a beautiful through ball to Alice Yokabaskas ’19, who placed the ball perfectly in the back of the net. At 25:37, Hyde’s Olivia Yoon ’18 continued her ferocious play, drawing a foul in the box. Samantha Wisdom ’19, with poise and skill, nailed the penalty kick into the back of the net, giving Hyde the lead.
The second half relied heavily on the defense of Kay Michaelian ’18, Halle Bourne ’20, Madison Hughes ’20, Bailey Kent ’18 and Kessia Mugabo ’17. The fierce five shut down the strong Hebron offense, playing tough the entire second half of soccer. Faith Spath ’18 was amazing in the goal. Spath had 14 saves, while also leading her team through her tremendous effort and voice on the field.
Hyde looks to build on this great start, facing Gould Academy on Saturday September 24 at 3:30pm at Gould.
