The Hyde School–Woodstock, CT season began at home against the MacDuffie School on Saturday 17, September with a 5-1 loss. The Wolfpack had the opening shot on goal when Jon Bell ‘17, receiving a long throw from Ian White ‘18, rocketed the ball into the hands of the MacDuffie goalkeeper. After ten minutes, MacDuffie’s forwards made a breakaway, scoring the first goal of the game and showing effective pressure on Hyde’s right flank. Minutes later, a Hyde foul in the box led to a successful penalty kick for MacDuffie. Although newcomer’s Cooper Felt ‘19 and Derrick Rwikangura ‘18 sought to counter-pressure, Hyde struggled to control possession in midfield. The MacDuffie School advanced to a 4-0 lead in the closing minutes of the half.
The second half opened with an excellent save by Dan Murray ‘17 on a driven shot from six yards. Felt and Bell continued to launch probing shots. Bell finally scored Hyde’s opening goal of the season on header from Felt’s corner-kick. The defensive line battled behind the leadership of Alex Sobel ‘17, who was Hyde’s man of the match, and Josh Schwartz ‘19. As both teams explored their benches, MacDuffie was able to finish the game with a final goal 5-1.
The Wolfpack’s core players showed great promise, and as other teammates gather experience, the team expects a strong season.
