Phoenix Varsity Boys Soccer @ Berwick Jamboree

Hyde School: 0 – Holderness School: 1

Hyde School: 1 – Gould Academy : 0

Hyde School: 1 – Berwick Academy: 3

Boys Varsity Soccer traveled to South Berwick Maine for the annual Berwick Jamboree on Saturday.  They played three 40 minute scrimmage matches over the course of the mostly sunny and warm afternoon.

Hyde School: 0 – Holderness School: 1

The first match was played on natural grass against Holderness School.  Match play in the first half was mostly even relative to shots on goal and possession.  Scott O’Brien`17 playing as a lone forward worked with center midfielder post graduate Zach Hambleton to create scoring opportunities, but none resulted in goals and the match at the half was knotted at 0-0.

Holderness had a more organized attack in the second half, testing defenders; Jason Filios`17, David Hentnick`17, Lawrence Moreace`18,  John Garrett`17 and keeper Greg Kidger`17.  Their attacking efforts were thwarted both by strong play by this defensive unit and some brilliant saves by Kidger`17.  However, a penalty kick was awarded to the opponent with less than 3 minutes remaining, the result of contact made by Hyde player during the confusion following an impressive save by Kidger.  The PK resulted in the only scoring of the match.

Hyde School: 1 – Gould Academy : 0

The second match was played on the same grass pitch as the first.  The team settled into a nice style of possession soccer for moments during the first half of play.  Center midfielder PG Zach Hambleton worked to direct the attacking efforts in a 4-5-1 formation.  This put Scott O’Brien`17 up top at forward, Jed Danforth`19 at left winger, Serge Mudogo`18 at right winger, post graduate Dylan Budd and Will Duerr`18 as holding center midfielders.  This combination worked well and resulted in a Hyde both, out shooting and out possessing Gould in the first half.  In the 18th minute Will Duerr`18 scored off a ball cleared from the back by defender Lawrence Moreace`18 to go up 1-0 just before the half.

The second half of play was much like the first.  However, some positional changes were made due to injury.  Wallace Ogens`17 moved to forward, Scott O’Brien`17 went to right winger and Serge Mudogo`18 moved to holding center midfielder.  Additionally, Kyler Hella`17 played at left fullback.    Much like the first half of play, Hyde outshot the opponent, but none of the balls found the back of the net.

Hyde School: 1 – Berwick Academy: 3

The third and final match was played no Berwick’s turf field.  The team made the quick adjustment to playing on this faster surface and had some early opportunities.  PG Zach Hambleton took a direct kick outside the box and found Scott O’Brien`17 who scored a nice goal on a  low shot coming from the right side of the goal in the 3rd minute.  Unfortunately, the Hyde boys sustained more injuries.  This necessitated resting 4 starting players for most of the match.  Se Jun Kim`18 replaced Kyler Hella`17 and Alex Crawley`18 replaced Serge Mudogo`18.  Berwick answered O’Brien’s goal shortly after restarting play.  They scored again in the 7th minute.   The difficulty continued when in the 9th minute, a Hyde defender tackled a Berwick forward from behind in the box.  They scored on the resulting penalty kick.  The score at half time was 3-1.

The second half was scoreless for both teams, but not for lack of trying on the part of the opponent.  Keeper Greg Kidger`17 made some amazing saves to keep the score sheet clear.  His tenacity and competitive spirit spurred on his teammates on and despite injury and fatigue the Hyde players kept working hard to score.

All in all, not a bad day.  Despite losing two of the three matches, the boys were competitive and showed some quality play against some outstanding opponents.  They started to gel as a team during this first round of competition.  There is much to work on, but there is much to work with.  Our next match will with St. Andrew’s School on Friday September 16th at St. Andrew’s, followed the next day with a match against Rocky Hill School also a St. Andrew’s at 12:00.
