The Hyde School XC Team traveled to Lincoln School’s athletic fields for their first race.  The course was mostly flat, mostly grass, and very sunny.  It was a warm day for a 5k but the team held up well.  It was the first race ever for the majority of the team after just more than a week of training and I was very impressed with their efforts and the results.  Of the six teams present, all of the teams in our SENE conference with the exception of PCD, our boys came in just one point behind the 2nd place Williams  team.  The Wolf Pack was led by Andrew West, 16 who took second place overall in 19:05, one minute behind the front runner from Wheeler.  This was his first race in the sport and a very promising beginning to the season.  Our second and third Khalil Johnson and Mehki McCray both seniors, and first time cross country runners, finished 22nd and 24th in the field of over 90 runners.  They completed the course in 22:50 and 22:54 respectively. Both athletes went out hard, tried to catch a ride with the leading pack and held on for the first half before losing steam.  This is common with new runners and I would not be surprised to see them putting the heat on those front pack runners by the end of the season after we start putting in some longer runs.  Omar Raddaoui began to shake off some of the rust from last season and came out with a solid 23:43 in 32nd place.  Everyone on the team had a great attitude, was ready to learn about racing, and left it all out on the course.  I look forward to seeing each of these athletes grow this season.  Next race is at PCD this coming Wednesday, PCD is a fast, very flat course, giving the kids the opportunity to shed some time and improve on their PR.
