Hyde School: 15 – Kents Hill School: 5
In a rematch of last week’s game, the boys varsity team took on Kents Hill for the second time in the 2016 season on Saturday at home. The game was played on the turf in warm weather.
After a close 10-8 win in their first meeting, the Phoenix came out firing early, looking to keep the game from staying close. Early in the game the bouys did a great job of possessing the ball on the offensive end, tiring out a Huskies squad that traveled with just three subs. With smart and efficient cutting and shooting, the Phoenix roared to a 10-3 halftime advantage. The offense looked as good as it has in the last few weeks and was led once more by captains Shemar Jack ‘16 (5g, 1a) and Aidan Bristow ‘16 (3g, 5a). In his second start of the season, Kyler Hella ‘17 (3g) netted his second hat trick of the year with James Kirby ‘17 (2g), Wallace Ogens ‘17 (1g), and Scott O’Brien ‘17 (1g, game-high 9gb) contributing to the scoring outburst as well.
Defensively, the Phoenix played patiently and stingy, as has become their style. They were led once more by captain Jesse Higgins ‘16 and with the return of Nick Mortazavi ‘16, with netminder McGehee Porter ‘17 (14 saves) returning to form after a down game in his last outing. Other notable play came from Jake Durkin ‘16, who has become a force to be reckoned with at the faceoff x, Ben Mooney ‘16, Chris Trombetta ‘17, and Tim Nickerson ‘17.
The Phoenix will play Kents Hill again at home on Wednesday for the first game of the MAISAD playoffs. With two wins over the 3rd-seeded Huskies in as many tries, the 2nd-seeded Phoenix will look to avoid the upset and continue their winning ways in the postseason.
