Hyde School: 3 – Hebron Academy: 12
Boys Varsity Lacrosse traveled to Hebron Academy on Friday the 6th to take on the Lumberjacks for the second time in the 2016 season. Coming in with an 8-1 record, the Phoenix were eager to redeem themselves after a loss to Hebron early in the season. The game was played on natural grass under sunny skies and warm temperatures.
The Phoenix came out firing early, winning the first faceoff. Over the course of the first quarter, the boys proved that they could play with the Hebron team, causing turnovers on the defensive end while running an efficient offense. By the end of the opening frame the boys had built a small 2-0 lead, though they wouldn’t enjoy it for long. Starting in the second frame, the Lumberjacks began shutting down the Phoenix clear and holding the ball on offense for extended periods of time. Despite the standard stellar play from netminder McGehee Porter ‘17 (18 saves) as well as starting defensemen Jesse Higgins ‘16, Brett Gerry ‘16, and Nick Mortazavi ‘16, the defense was asked to do too much and eventually had lapses in coverage. Before the end of the first half, Hebron had struck five straight times to build a 5-2 lead.
Though the team made halftime adjustments to the clear, the Phoenix had a tough time playing from behind, struggling throughout the second half to find a rhythm. A late goal proved too little too late, as the Lumberjacks netted six more in the second half to reach the final score.
Offensively, the Phoenix were led by captains Shemar Jack ‘16 (2g), and Aidan Bristow ‘16 (1g). Jake Durkin ‘16 played admirably at the faceoff x, with other notable play coming from Wallace Ogens ‘17, Randy LaVea ‘16, and Brandon Nelson ‘16.
The Phoenix travel to Kents Hill School next to take on the Huskies for the first time in the 2016 schedule. The boys enter the game at 8-2, while Kents Hill enters at 5-6. The game is a good chance for the Phoenix to bounce back from a tough loss.
