Another Win for Phoenix Boys Varsity Lacrosse vs. Mt. Ararat

Hyde School: 15 – Mt. Ararat: 5

The Boys Varsity Lacrosse travelled down to the turf field to play Mt. Ararat for their home opener of the 2016 season. The game was played in cloudy and windy conditions with occasional rain showers.

Despite short rest after playing their first game 24 hours before, the Phoenix boys played hard en route to their second win of the young season. The offense started cold, turning the ball over several times in quick fashion over the course of the first quarter of play. However, thanks to spectacular defense led by Captain Jesse Higgins ‘16  and an early goal by Captain Shemar Jack ‘16, the team came out of the first frame locked in a 1-1 tie.

Thanks to some adjustments and a more patient and settled offense, the team started to come alive in the second quarter of the game, carrying a 5-1 lead into halftime. Moving into the second half of the game, the team started to fire on all cylinders with continued strong defensive play and an explosion of second-half offense. The Phoenix ended with 15 goals, thanks to a game-high 7 points from Jack (5g, 2a), the second straight hat trick from Greg Kidger ‘17 (3g, 3a), and the first three career goals from Tim Nickerson ‘18 (3g). Also scoring were Captain Aidan Bristow ‘16 (1g), James Kirby (2g, 1a) and Brandon Nelson ‘16 (1g). The defense was once again anchored by McGehee Porter ’17 (15 saves) in net, with Nick Mortazavi ‘16 and first-year player Brett Gerry ‘16 playing very well. Other noteworthy play came from Jake Durkin ‘16, Connor Foye ‘18, and Kyler Hella ‘17.

This was a good test for the Phoenix boys, as they showed themselves capable of responding to adversity and making changes to their play mid-game. Our next game will be played on April 11th at home against North Yarmouth Academy. First whistle is set for 4:00pm
