Wolfpack Boys Varsity Lacrosse Falls to Portsmouth Abbey in Season Opener

Portsmouth, RI (04/06/2016)

Hyde 4, Portsmouth Abbey 15

The Wolfpack Boys Varsity lacrosse team traveled to Portsmouth Abbey on Wednesday for our first game of the season. This was a trial by fire for many players who are very new to the sport of lacrosse with only days and weeks under their belts. The first half was largely a learning experience as the well-coach Abbey team was able to build a large lead early. After making some adjustments at the half, the Wolfpack were able to clamp down on the defensive side leading to a 3-3 second half. The Wolfpack look forward to the opportunity to get back out on the field and continue to improve in order to take it to Rocky Hill on Friday (04/08).

Throughout yesterday’s game here were many examples of hard work, sportsmanship and determination displayed by Wolfpack players. Reese Norton ‘17 led the Wolfpack side from whistle to whistle playing almost every position on the field. Norton finished the game with three of Hyde’s four goals, and a number of hard earned ground balls. The Wolfpack’s other goal was scored by Alex Sobel ‘17 who battled hard all day at the faceoff x and on both sides of the ball. Another highlight was the stout defensive play and sportsmanship showcased by Wren Piper ‘16 who really found his place in the second half, laying bodies on the crease and then picking them right back up again at the whistle. Hyde also received incredible hustle and gritty play from midfielders Sean Duffy ‘18 and Spencer Levin ‘17. Their hard work on faceoff wings, in transition, and on defense gave the Wolfpack a number of key ground balls and possessions. Look for these two to continue to make a larger and larger impact as the season continues. However, Wednesday’s game ball went to goalie Ian Cooke ‘19 who anchored to Wolfpack defense making save after save. With an inexperienced defense in front of him Cooke saw a lot of shots, but never got discouraged or frustrated. He worked hard all game and came away with many awesome saves that allowed to Wolfpack to keep fighting. Please come out and support the squad as we take on Rocky Hill at home tomorrow!

Go Wolfpack!
