Hyde Phoenix Wrestling at 2016 NEISWA Championships

22 February 2016

This weekend the Phoenix of Hyde-Bath were represented by Senior Captain Brett Gerry at the 69th Annual New England Independent Schools Wrestling Association Championships, hosted by Avon-Old Farms School in CT.  Brett qualified for this tournament as the #1 seed in his weight class of 182 pounds based on his undefeated season record and championships at both the Northern New England Invitational and Class A League Championships.

Over the course of the two day tournament, Brett wrestled to a 3-0 record through the semi-finals making short work of his first round opponent and cruising to a 5-1 victory in the quarter-finals.  Brett made a STRONG statement in the semi-finals wrestling to a dominating pinfall victory over a very good opponent from Noble and Greenough School, and the stage was set for the championship finals.

In the finals, Brett squared off against the #2 seed from Trinity-Pawling School of NY and was both controlling and explosive!  Brett was patient on his feet racking up 3 takedowns in the match, and absolutely dominating on top, barely allowing his opponent room to breath much less mount any offense.

When the final whistle blew, Brett owned the 9-4 victory and stood atop the podium as the 2016 New England Champion!

The 28 team points Brett scored with his victories was enough to secure 22nd place out of the 47 New England Prep Schools qualifying wrestlers for this year’s Championships.

Phoenix Wrestling and Brett Gerry will head to Lehigh University this week for the National Prep Wrestling Championships!
