Phoenix Wrestlers Host Northern New England Invitational

The Phoenix of Hyde-Bath played host on Saturday 6 February to 16 New England Prep Schools for the annual Northern New England Invitational. This event, hosted in a rotation between Hyde-CT, Hyde-ME, and Tilton School proves every year to be a strong test for wrestlers as they end their regular season competition and set their sights on post season tournaments.

This year was certainly no exception with many weight classes seeing finals action between two of the top five ranked wrestlers in New England.

The Phoenix had a outstanding day on the mat with four wrestlers reaching the Championship semi-finals. Junior 120 pounder Alex Hilton entered the semis having earned two upset wins to get there. Unfortunately, he suffered a match ending injury and was forced to withdraw from competition. Senior Andre Allen reached the semis at 160 where he wrestled an incredible battle with the #1 seeded wrestler from Landmark School. Andre ended up on the losing end of things despite an incredible effort.

All eyes turned to Senior Captain Jake Durkin at 152 pounds and Senior Captain Brett Gerry at 182 pounds in the semi finals. Both wrestled to impressive and dominating wins in the semi-final round and earned places in the Championship Finals. In the finals, Jake squared off against a Middlesex School wrestler ranked #3 in New England. In a highly dramatic match, Jake battled through moments of adversity and ignited the home crowd with a incredible second period pin and 1st place finish!

Senior Captain Brett Gerry was simply unstoppable all day and put on an unbelievable clinic of power and control throughout the day wrestling to 4 wins by pin without surrendering a point to his opponents. Brett’s victory in the finals capped a performance which earned him both 1st place in his weight and the 2016 Northern New England Invitational Most Outstanding Wrestler Award!

The Phoenix head to Hyde-CT on Saturday February 13 for the Class A League Championships and the chance to qualify for New Englands.

Wish us luck!
