This past Wednesday, January, 20th, the Wolfpack varsity wrestlers traveled up to our sister school in Bath, ME to compete in the annual “Winter Classic” showdown. The atmosphere was great with lots of fans and energy. We wrestled in the Bath Theater under the spotlights which created a unique setting for this great Hyde versus Hyde match-up.
We opened at the 160lb weight class and team captain Alex Sobel ’17 started us with 6pts on the board after a hard fought pin in the final seconds of the first period. Bath would take the next 12pts in forfeits at the 170 and 182lb weight classes. Wren Piper ’16 faced a difficult match at the 220lb weight class and lost by pin. Woodstock would then take a forfeit at the 106lb weight class. Jack Fu ’19 had the highlight match at the 113lb weight class. He battled all 6 minutes against an equally skilled opponent, but lost by a close decision (4-5). Bath would then take an additional 12pts in forfeits at the 120 and 126lb classes. Altug Yilmaz ’19, who joined our squad just the day before as a transfer from indoor track, had a great season opener at the 132lb class. He showed some innate skills but he has a ways to go. He lost by pin. He will have a promising career ahead of him if he sticks with the sport. Woodstock would then take 6pts by forfeit at the 138lb class. Corban Basile ’18 continued his winning streak with a second period pin at the 145lb weight class. We wrapped up at the 152lb class where team captain Dominick Rizzo ’16 lost to a tough opponent by pin in the first period. With six actual matches, Hyde-Bath bested us 4-2 and earned the points for the President’s Cup. Although this was a loss, the day was exciting and a model of sportsmanship. This is always great to see amongst our two campuses. We will hopefully edge these guys out in the Northern New England Tournament a few weeks from now. Congratulations go to Logan Kidwell and his great squad of young men on a well-deserved victory.
We will be having a weekend off from matches and will use this time to recuperate as a team. Our JV boys will be heading to Loomis on Saturday for a JV jamboree. Wish them luck and don’t forget to follow us on twitter. “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop!”
