Hyde Schools met on the mat in Bath on Wednesday to decide the President’s Cup for the winter season, and the Boys from Bath were ready to wrestle!
Squaring off against the Wolfpack of Hyde-CT in the intimate space of the theater with the whole school in attendance created an electric atmosphere, and the Phoenix responded.
Junior newcomer Tim Nickerson began the match wrestling at 160 pounds, and was instantly in on his opponent’s legs resulting in a takedown. From there, Tim made some erors in his first action of the season which his opponent would capitalize on, and the Phoenix found themselves in the hole 6-0.
Senior Captain Brett Gerry stepped out onto the mat wrestling up two weight classes at 220 pounds after senior Brett Van Vort and junior Aaron Ayala each recieved forfeit victories. Brett was simply dominant despite the size disadvantage – tossing his opponent to his back in the opening salvos before securing a second period pin victory.
Entering the 113 pound bout, the Phoenix led 18 – 12 and would not look back. 113 pounder Junior Jin wrestled an incredible match against an equally skilled opponent and battled to a 5-3 victory which came down to the wire! Congratulate Junior on his determination and toughness. He earned it!
After teammates Alex Hilton (120) and Jack He (126) picked up forfeit victories, sophomore Connor Foye took to the mat at 132 pounds. After a scoreless minute, Foye electrified the crowd with an incredible double leg takedown which put his Wolfpack opponent directly on his back. Connor locked up control and pinned his opponent in the first period!
Senior James Scharpf had his opportunities in the 145 pound bout though he was forced to settle for the loss in the end.
With the dual meet victory and the President’s Cup secured, senior captain Jake Durkin stepped onto the mat in the final bout at 152 pounds and delivered several HUGE takedowns before stacking his opponent for the fall and the 45 – 12 victory!
