On Friday, the Hyde varsity basketball returned from break and took on rival Hebron. Despite a poor first half, the Phoenix won big, 68-38.
Most of the team were back early from break, showing a strong commitment to continue the success of December. After getting through a difficult ‘training camp’ we were ready to begin our new season in January. Despite the WANT TO, we were held back in the first half by a lack of ball movement and an injury. The defense was solid—holding Hebron to 18 points but we only scored 21. The players held their own meeting in the locker room at half, committing to picking up the pace of play. It showed in the second half.
Throughout the season, the Phoenix have been paced by outstanding guard play, primarily from Antoine Montgomery, Miguel Prieto and Gatouch Pan. Prieto and Montgomery took over in the second half, driving to the basket, playing off of one another and pressuring the opposing ball handler. This ball pressure ended up being a key to the game. Another key contributor committed to a strong January was senior Andrew Palermo. Palermo scored all 8 of his points in the second half and changed the course of the game by taking a key charge early in the second. All thirteen members of the team entered the game and it was great to see Hyde basketball in the second half.
The Phoenix were paced by the combo of Prieto and Montgomery ( combined for 41 points and 12 assists ) and sophomores Serge Mudago and Kahiel Depass played very well. Next up? Kent’s hill later in the week.
