Yesterday, the Hyde boys’ basketball team took on Bradford Christian in an away tilt and won 91-50. The Phoenix ( despite getting lost three times on the trip ) were led by an impressive performance by senior Andrew Palermo who poured in 32 points.
As a new member of NEPSAC basketball, I must admit, it can prove to be difficult to find gyms in towns I have never been to. This proved to be the case yesterday as we got lost three times before finding the Bradford Christian team. A disorganized warm-up did impact the game—we started slow on the defensive end and after 4 minutes, trailed by two. However, a spark off the bench by Palermo helped the Phoenix build a lead. Palermo and dynamic forward Gatouch Pan 17’ were active in the paint, slashing for open looks and converting on extra chances. Pan had a personal highlight with a steal and a monster finish in transition. At the half, we led by 20.
The second half was evidence of the continued maturation of our role players. Seniors Brandon Nelson and Evans Kagame played with great energy and competed with the opposing teams starting lineup. Guard Mike Siben continued his recent form with well-timed drives and passes. Overall, it was a solid win without a few players dealing with minor injury and illness.
The Phoenix were paced by Palermo ( 32 points, 5 rebounds ) and Pan ( 15 points, 15 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 dunks ). Next up: an exciting weekend with two home games. Friday vs Landmark and Saturday vs New Hampton. Hope to see you there! We improve to 8-2 on the season.
