The Wolfpack varsity wrestlers traveled to Wallingford, CT on Wednesday, January 13th, to compete against Hotchkiss and the host school, Choate Rosemary Hall. We brought a small line-up of only six young men, which meant that we had to win all matches to even make it a close one. In wrestling, if one team has a participant at a weight class and the other team does not, the team with a man is awarded 6pts for a forfeit. With only six wrestlers, we were giving up 48pts from the start.
The Wolfpack matched up against Hotchkiss in the first round of the tri-meet. We had an impressive showing against their squad and only lost one out of the five matches we had against them. Markus Rhyner ’16 earned a first period pin at the 106lb weight class and remains undefeated (11-0) for the season. Ryan Wang ’19 won his first match of the varsity season at the 126lb weight class. He pinned his opponent in the final seconds of the second period. Long Mai ’17 traveled with varsity to help our numbers, but did one better by earning a pin at the 138lb weight class. This was a surprising turn of events and the team was motivated by his effort. Corban Basile ’18 fought tough against his opponent in the 145lb weight class and went in to overtime after ending with a tie at 1-1 after six minutes. Unfortunately, his opponent got the first take down in overtime and won in a 3-1 decision. Team captains, Dominick Rizzo ’16 and Alex Sobel ’17 continued to be reliable scorers for Hyde and both won their respective matches by pins at the 152 and 160lb weight classes. When the dust settled, Hyde lost 33-30 even though we won 5 out of the 6 matches. Only 3pts were earned by Hotchkiss in actual matches. The loss meant little to the team since we knew we did the best we could do, so we geared up to face a much tougher Choate line-up.
The second match of the day was against the host school, Choate Rosemary Hall. Choate was a top-5 Class A team for several years running, so we knew we had to work hard to earn our wins. Choate also had a full line-up therefore we were giving up 48 points before the match even begun. We opened with the 152lb weight class where Dominick Rizzo ’16 earned his second pin of the day. At the 160lb class, Alex Sobel ’17 earned another 6pts with a 30 second pin. Corban Basile ‘18 also earned a pin with a cradle at the 145lb class. The match of the day went to Markus Rhyner ’16 who wrestled a scrappy opponent at the 106lb class. Rhyner used his explosiveness and power to earn Hyde another win by pin in the final seconds of the second period. He is now 12-0 for the season (including forfeits). Hyde would only lose at the 126 and 138lb weight classes meaning that we won 4 out of 6 matches. Yet again, we would lose by forfeits alone. Hyde earned 24 of its points and Choate earned 12. We could not be prouder as a team of the effort put in by all.
Please make sure to wish us luck this Saturday as we face-off against Philips Academy, Deerfield Academy, Northfield Mount Hermon School, and our sister school, Hyde-Bath. We need the points to earn the President’s Cup.
