Woodstock (January 11, 2016) – Monday, January 11 the girls JV basketball team hosted St. Andrews school in their first game of the season. With only a few substitutes and only limited experience, the girls started off confused and disorganized. As the first half progressed, they began to pull together and gain a better understanding of playing as a team. As their defense became stronger, their voices on the court did too. Claudia Saulhany ’18 helped to give feedback to her teammates and direct them to positions. Joyce Zhang ’16 helped to anchor the defense and stayed strong in the center. Molly Yue ’18, Elsa Zhang ’17, and Allison Guan ’16 helped to put pressure on the ball and work well with direction from others throughout the game. While Hyde learned a lot of about effectively working together, they unfortunately fell short of the St. Andrew’s more experienced team. At the end of the first half Hyde was behind 2-13. They pulled together to discuss better positioning and strong defense without drawing fouls on the other team.
With the start of the second half, the girls continued to work hard with each other and improved communication. Unfortunately, a lot of fouls in the second half and the other team pressuring over half-court was difficult for Hyde and they continued to slip further behind. They ended the game 4-37 with two great shots from Saulhany and a great effort put in by the whole team. They are looking to work on creating plays, improving communication, and skill development in the upcoming weeks with their next game Saturday home against Portsmouth Abbey.
