Marianapolis Prep: 48
The Wolfpack varsity team traveled to nearby Thompson, CT to compete in dual against Marianapolis this past Wednesday, January, 6th. Our teams have had a long standing rivalry dating back to when we used to be in the SENE’s together. In the past few years, Hyde has been victorious, but this year we were caught by surprise. With only one day of practice to prepare, the Wolfpack had several wrestlers not on weight or in shape for a match. This led to us only bringing 8 of the 14 weight classes. Luckily, Marianapolis only had 10 of the 14 weight classes. We faced off at the 106, 126, 138, 145, 152 and 195 classes with many of the other classes having forfeits. We needed to win only 4 of these matches to win the day, but we found only two wins thanks to Markus Rhyner ’16 and Dominick Rizzo ’16. These two young men earned pins at the 106 and 152lb weight classes. Our other wrestlers fell by pins and showed that we needed to work extra hard in the coming days to prepare for Saturday’s meet in Dudley, MA against two public schools.
Worcester Technical: 12
The Wolfpack varsity team traveled to Dudley, MA this Saturday, January, 9th to compete against Worcester Technical High School and Shepard Hill Regional High School. This was a newer event added last year that allowed for our team to mingle with some local public schools. We faced off first against Worcester Technical, a team we have not faced before. Both line ups were thin with there being matches only in the 145, 152 and 195lb weight classes. The 106, 126, and 160 classes went to Hyde for forfeits whereas Worcester Tech earned points for forfeits at the 170 and 182 classes. It was a great day for the Wolfpack as we swept all three matches and only gave up the 12pts for forfeits. Corban Basile ’18 went the distance in the 145lb weight class and won by a major decision (13-3). Dominick Rizzo ’16 earned a 30 second pin in the first period and Christian Bassette ’16 earned a hard fought pin against a tough opponent in the 195lb weight class. With a win behind us, we watched on as Worcester Tech and Shepard Hill battled, scouting the opposition for our upcoming match.
