Wolfpack Wrestlers vs Canterbury, Suffield, Marvelwood

Hyde-Woodstock: 25

Suffield Academy: 24

The Hyde Wolfpack varsity wrestlers traveled to Canterbury School to compete in a quad-meet this Saturday against Suffield Academy, Marvelwood and the host school, Canterbury.  We opened up against Suffield, a team that dominated Westerns in the past and have usually soundly beaten our squad.  Corban Basile ’18 began our assault with a hair-raising pin with only 3-seconds left on the clock in the third period.  Sean Duffy ’18 put more points on the board with a win by decision (8-2) over his opponent in the 170lb class.  Christian Bassette ’16 earned a fast pin (1:03) in the 195lb class.  The highlight match went to Markus Rhyner ’16 who battled his opponent into overtime.  In overtime, the winner is whoever can get the first takedown.  Markus hit an explosive double leg shot for the win and helped us seal the victory.  It is worth noting that at the end of the match we were tied 24-24 with Suffield and to decide who won we had to go to criteria D in the rule book which declared us winner based on our team winning 5 of the 9 match ups.  This win gave us our second this season.

Hyde-Woodstock: 9

Marvelwood School: 48

Our second match of the day was against Marvelwood, a team that is not usually in our rotation.  Marvelwood came to compete and quickly pinned several of our guys in the first period.  Yet again, the highlight match went to Markus Rhyner ’16 who once more went into overtime against his opponent in the 113lb weight class.  True to form, Markus hit another explosive double leg shot and earned the only victory against Marvelwood.  After a pep talk, we mentally prepared for Canterbury School, a team with a strong lineup.

Hyde-Woodstock: 13

Canterbury School: 60

Our final match was against Canterbury and they had a full lineup which put us at a 42pt deficit before we even began wrestling due to forfeits.  Reno Lowder ’19 impressed his team by putting up a tough fight against an opponent with more skill.  He made it to the second period before getting pinned.  Corban Basile ’18 wrestled tough for all six minutes and won by major decision (10-2) to put 4pts up for the Wolfpack.  Christian Bassette ’16 earned his second pin in the day.  He is quickly becoming a key member of our lineup and we are excited to see where his season goes.  Markus Rhyner ’16 earned a hat-trick for the day with a win by decision (9-5) earning us our final 3pts.  Although seemingly a blow out, our boys won 3 out of the 7 matches we wrestled, making this a lot closer than it may seem.
