Medal-Winners Aaron Douek ’17 and Jacob Callender ’19
December 12, 2015
The Wolf pack JV wrestling team headed to Buzzards Bay this past Saturday to compete at Tabor Academy’s “Futures-Wrestling Tournament”. Hyde faced a talented assortment of grapplers from Milton Academy, the Belmont Hill School, Choate-Rosemary Hall, Deerfield Academy, and host Tabor Academy.
The team set out with the shared goal of attacking early and often, and wrestling with the toughness and grit that has defined Hyde School wrestling. Keith Scafe ’17, Long Mai ’17, and Bill Lin ’16, all picked up wins. Despite being sidelined due to injury, senior Dominick Rizzo ’17 used his experience and knowledge of the sport to do an impressive job in providing leadership to his younger teammates throughout the day.
Aaron Douek ’17 and Jacob Callender ’19 stole the show, and were the two Hyde grapplers that finished the day with bronze medals around their necks. Douek started the day with a first period pin. He suffered a tough loss in the quarter-finals, but won two straight matches to earn a spot in the third place match. Douek pinned his Tabor foe in the first period to walk away with bronze.
Freshman Jacob Callender ‘19 earned performance of the tournament for Hyde. He started the day with a dominating second period pin by way of half nelson. Leading 10-4 in his second match, Callender’s inexperience showed when he was caught on his back and pinned. Callender then rallied through adversity, to win his third match by fall. In the third place match, Callender put on a clinic, taking down the opposing wrestler with double-leg takedown after takedown, until finally finishing a stellar performance with his third pin of the day.
The JV Wrestling squad looks forward to competing against Northfield Mount Herman, Loomis Chaffee, and Cardigan Mountain on January 9, 2016.
