Wolfpack Wrestlers Host NMH, Worcester Academy

Hyde-CT: 11

Northfield Mount Hermon: 44

The Hyde Wolfpack was excited to host its first home meet of the year against Northfield Mount Hermon and Worcester Academy.  We opened against NMH, a school that dominated the Class A’s for most of the last decade.  This year, NMH brought a strong squad with lots of athleticism.  The Wolfpack squad quickly fell to pins in the first three weight classes.  Corban Basile ’18 wrestled with a lot of heart against an opponent that outmatched him in skill.  He forced the match to a decision in which he lost 14-6, but he never quit.  Alex Sobel ’17 also had a hard fought match against a Class A ranked opponent at the 160lb weight class.  He lost 13-2, but showed heart and determination.  Lastly, Christian Bassette ’16 bumped up to the 220lb weight class (which means he was 40lbs lighter than his opponent) and earned a pin which electrified the crowd.  Although this first match up was a loss as a team, we were heartened by the effort of all.

Hyde-CT: 33

Worcester: 30

Our second match up was against Worcester Academy.  This has always been a close one and this year was no different. Both of our teams had several forfeits which allowed for the match to be even.  The key wrestlers were our 126lb, 152lb, 170lb and 113lb guys.  Again, a star of the match was Corban Basile ’18 who won a tough fought decision against his man at the 152lb weight class.  Tied with only 10 seconds on the clock, Corban earned a last second two point near fall to clutch the victory by decision.  With the score at 30 Worcester to 27 Hyde, we had one last match to claim victory.  Markus Rhyner ’16 came out like a man on fire in the 113lb class.  He was a lot stronger than his opponent, but lacked the finesse to earn a quick pin.  If he were to win by decision, we would only have earned three team points and lacked the criteria to win a tie breaker.  We needed a major decision, tech fall or pin to clinch the win.  In the last 10 seconds of the third period, Markus Rhyner finally came through with a pin.  Huge win for him and for the team!

We appreciated the support at the home match, especially from Mr. Cannon and Mr. Paige who brought the whole varsity basketball team up to watch mid-practice.  We are excited for this upcoming Saturday when we travel to New Milford, CT to face off against Marvelwood, Suffield and the host school, Canterbury.  Check Twitter for updates.

All the best,

Coach Jenkins, Coach Labeef and Coach Lahiff
