Hyde School Bath: 4 – Hyde School Woodstock: 5
The two sister schools played on Friday October 23rd in Bath. The contest took place on a natural grass pitch under cool conditions and partly cloudy skies.
The Phoenix scored the first goal of the match in the 3rd minute when Aidan Bristow`16 found the back of the net off a James Lee`16 assist. The Bath squad scored again in the 12th minute on a corner kick taken by Dylan Budd`16. The Wolf Pack Keeper got a piece of the ball, but couldn’t maintain possession, Kyler Hella`17 capitalized and kicked it in. Two minutes later, Captain Ben Mooney`16 scored an unassisted goal from the right flank. In the 25th minute, the opponent notched one when the Phoenix gave up an ‘own goal’, the result of a defensive deflection that found the back of the goal. The score was 3-1 at half time.
The Phoenix scored their 4th goal on a James Kellogg`16 free kick that Ben Mooney`16 converted with a nice header at the far post in the 50th minute. Woodstock scored a second goal in the 59th minute to make it 4-2. At this point, the official warned each team that the game would be ended early for safety reasons related to darkness. Both teams continued to play hard, but momentum had started to shift. Woodstock was awarded a penalty kick in the 62rd minute for a hard tackle in the box. They converted the PK to bring it within one goal. The Wolf Pack scored two more goals in the final 3 minutes of the game before it was halted due to darkness.
This was a tough way for the game to end. We gave up an ‘own goal’, a penalty kick, and fell apart defensively at a critical time, allowing the opponent to edge us out just before the game was cut short. It was a shocking blow to realize we had squandered a 3 goal lead and came out on the losing end of things. We will be working on defensive positioning, and the importance of clearing the ball out of the box without committing fouls, in the practice time leading up to our next match. We play Bradford Christian Academy on Wednesday October 29th at 3:45 away.
