Hyde School: 3 –Bradford Christian Academy: 2
Boys Varsity Soccer traveled to Amesbury Massachusetts to play Bradford Christian Academy on Wednesday October 28th. The match was played on artificial turf in steady rain and moderately strong winds.
Hyde scored the first goal of the contest in the 16th minute of play. Forward Duncan O’ Rourke`16 scored on a nice James Kellogg`16 through ball. Though the Phoenix did a nice job of moving the ball forward, Bradford Christian was very deft at setting the off sides trap. This resulted in many nice through balls ending in off-sides calls. The defensive unit consisting of; Nolan Lowder`16 at Centerback, Brett Van Vort`16 at Rightback, Brandon Nelson`16 at Leftback and Dylan Budd`16 at Stopper, did a good job of containing their two skilled Forwards. They combined with Keeper Greg Kidger`17 to keep the sheet clean for the first half. The score at the break was 1-0.
The weather deteriorated and it was raining hard at the start of the second half. During the first half, the Phoenix had the wind on their backs, but now were facing it. This didn’t deter them from working to play the ball forward and behind the opponent’s defensive players, who were still pushing up near the half field line. Outside midfielders; Kyler Hella`17 and Aidan Bristow`16, left and right respectively, did a better job of getting the ball wide down the flanks and into the corners. The opponents managed to apply similar pressure and scored a tying goal in the 49th minute. However, just over a minute later the Hyde lads responded when James Kellogg`16 scored off a Duncan O’Rourke`16 assist to go back up a goal. Due to Bradford Christian compressing the field by pushing their defenders up high, the Phoenix Midfielders; Ben Mooney`16 and James Lee`16 had to play the ball in a tighter space. They adjusted by dribbling less and playing a quicker ‘two touch’ style of soccer. Defensively, the Phoenix started ‘man-marking’ the opponent’s scoring player. In the 65th minute Bradford Christian scored an equalizing goal on a Penalty Kick, the result of a hard tackle in the box. Just three minutes later, Duncan O’Rourke`16 scored the go ahead goal from the left side of the box. Both teams battled for the remainder of the match with the Phoenix managing to maintain the lead to capture the win.
This was a great game for us. The opponent was stronger than when we last faced them early in the season, the weather was bad, and we battled back to regain the lead twice. It was a team win in the sense that everyone on the field contributed and worked hard for the duration of the game. Our next match is against St. Andrew’s School at 1:00 on the turf field at home on Saturday October 31st.
