Hyde School: 2 – St Andrew’s: 8
Boys Varsity Soccer hosted St. Andrew’s School on Saturday. The match was played on the turf field under sunny skies and warm late autumn temperatures.
St. Andrew’s scored 6 goals in the first 45 minutes of play, all of them pretty. They played exceptionally well, moving the ball with ease and out shooting the Phoenix. They are a talented group of players that worked together and to out play the Phoenix.
At half time, the coaches pulled the team together to discuss the situation. They talked about the fact that because they were facing an extremely strong opponent, it meant they had a decision to make. They could use it as a learning opportunity and play their hardest, hoping to rise to their level, or they could weather the storm for 45 more minutes. The team responded by going out in the second half and playing even. Both the opponents and the Phoenix score 2 goals. For Hyde; Ben Mooney`16 scored on a James Kellogg`16 assist for the first goal in the 49th minute, and James Kellogg`16 notched an unassisted goal in the 72nd minute. These offensive opportunities arouse because of the strong effort and useful distribution of the ball by the defensive unit; Dylan Budd`16 at Stopper, Nolan Lowder`16 at Centerback, Brett Van Vort`16 at Rightback, and Brandon Nelson`16 at Leftback. Other notable play came from James Lee`16 and Ben Mooney`16 in the center of the field, and Greg Kidger`17 at Keeper.
This was the strongest team we have faced this season. They are the defending NEPSAC New England champions and it is clear that they have a quality team that plays as a unit. We did a great job of staying in the game after a rough first half of play. We need to continue our work defensively in terms of not overcommitting and rather focusing on containing strong attacking players. There has been marked improvement on this front, but we can do an even better job. Or next match is Monday November 2, 2015 at the High Mowing School at 3:00. This is a rescheduled game that was canceled due to bad weather earlier in the season.
