Hyde School: 0 – Kents Hill: 8
Boys Varsity Soccer traveled to Kents Hill Maine to play Kents Hill School on Saturday. The match was played on their artificial turf pitch under partly cloudy skies and brisk temperatures with a steady northwesterly breeze,
In the 8th minute of play, Kents Hill scored their first goal on a penalty kick, the result of a tackle from behind in the box. They scored again less than one minute later. At this point, our defense struggled to stop the opponent from penetrating the defensive third of the field. Kents Hill generated some very nice through balls and scored 3 more goals before the half elapsed, making it 5-0.
Another penalty kick was awarded to the opponent in the 50th minute for a hard tackle in the box. They scored two more time in the game; in the 57th minute and the 73rd minute.
This was a crushing loss. Aside from missing multiple starters, we did not play all that well. There were some strong individual efforts, but as a whole we did not play well. Defensive mistakes, a lack of passing through the midfield and aggressive play by a skilled opponent made for a good old fashioned ‘shellacking.’ As a team, we need to go back to basics and focus on the fundamentals of playing simply. Individuals need to do their jobs, play their positions with effort, and support each other. Our next game is this afternoon, a rescheduled match with Hebron Academy at 4:15 on their field. They are a strong team and will certainly be a challenging opponent.
