Berwick Tops Phoenix BVS 0-3

Hyde School; 0 – Berwick Academy; 3

The Hyde Boys Varsity Soccer team traveled to South Berwick Maine to play a match on Saturday with Berwick Academy.  It was played on their artificial turf pitch under cool clear weather.

Berwick out possessed Hyde early in the game, putting significant pressure on the defensive unit consisting of; Captain Brandon Nelson`16 at Centerback, Chris  Trombetta`17 at Stopper, Brett Van Vort`16 at Right Fullback and Jesse Higgins`16 at Left Fullback.  In the 31st minute Berwick scored on a play that involved Keeper Greg Kidger`17 making a good save, and a Hyde defender inadvertently touching the ball across the goal line while attempting to clear it out.  They scored again 3 minutes later to go up 2-0 at the half.

Some positional changes for the second half resulted in Hyde having a few more scoring chances.  However, the Hyde lads struggled to find consistent connections with their passing through the midfield.  This, combined with the strong offensive threat of the opponent kept them on their heels and in a defensive mode.  In the 63rd minute, Berwick scored their final goal.  Additional notable play came from newcomer to the starting lineup, Lawrence Morace`17, who played Stopper in the first half and Center Midfield in the second.

This was a tough game for us.  We did not rise to the challenge and perform up to our potential.  There were certainly times when we played as a unit and moved the ball well.  However, the opponent did a better job of switching fields and finding ways to penetrate our defense.  I feel we could have played at the same level as this team, but for some reason were unable to find our grove.  The coaches and captains will be meeting to discuss how to regain the completive spirit we had early on in the season.  The next game will be Wednesday  October 7th at 4:00pm in Bethel Maine with Gould Academy.
