(Woodstock, CT, October 14) – After a solid week of practicing, drilling, fitness, and team talks, the Hyde Girls Varsity Soccer team scored their first two goals of the season, but still endured a tough loss to PCD (final score: 2-3 PCD). Within the first five minutes, it became clear that the midfield has finally become a cohesive unit; they completed passes and transitioned smoothly from offense to defense. For the first time this season, Hyde had ample attack opportunities, and twenty-five minutes into the first half, Maddie O’Connor ‘16 finally broke the PCD defensive line and, receiving a pass from Diary Rojas ’19, O’Connor scored Hyde’s first goal of the season! The PCD team was reinvigorated after halftime, attacking relentlessly. Hyde’s defense was anchored by the outside wings, Joanna Ren ’16 and Coco Cai ’17, but PCD penetrated the back line and scored their first goal at minute 16. The Wolfpack became visibly discomfited by the goal, and began to make sloppy mistakes, which were capitalized on by PCD, resulting in two more successive goals. The highlight of the defensive play was absolutely Daisy Humsey’s ’17, exquisite save on a direct penalty kick. With fifteen minutes left in the half, Cai restarted play with a throw-in directly to Alexis Bourgoin’s ‘17 feet, which she carried all the way to score a beautiful goal across the net and into the far corner. It was a fantastic day for the Wolfpack, with supportive fans on the sidelines who contributed to the feelings of pride and success that came with this well-fought loss.
