Hyde v. Saint Thomas More
The Boys Varsity Soccer team made a trip to Saint Thomas More on Thursday for the teams’ second contest of the season against one another. Having defeated STM the previous week, the boys took the field with an air of confidence. Throughout the first half, the Wolfpack had trouble finding the back of the net and struggled to connect passes. Although the team had difficulty performing as one unit, Hyde had plenty of individual successes on the field. In particular, newcomer Brett Mandel ‘16 impressed the coaches with his exceptional hard work and contagious positive attitude on and off the field. In the last minutes of the first half, Hyde was awarded a penalty kick but the shot was saved by the STM goalie. With the score tied 0-0 at the end of the half, the boys walked off the field thirsty for a goal.
The Wolfpack recognized the urgency to put points on the scoreboard at the start of the second half and returned onto the pitch with purpose. Jonathan Bell ‘17 scored the first goal of the match after receiving a perfectly sent ball from Anthony Martocchio ‘16 on the defensive line. Soon after, Hyde was given an indirect kick at the half-field mark. Bell served the ball into the offensive zone where it was received by Kris Carroll ‘16, who took a touch and fired the ball into the back of the net. Throughout the rest of the game, Carroll went on to score another goal off of a penalty kick, and Bell concluded the game by scoring once more off of a pass from Carroll, leaving the final score at 4-0.
The Wolfpack will take to their home turf on Friday at 4pm to challenge the powerhouse of the league, Saint Andrews. Be sure to come out and support Boys Varsity Soccer!
