The Phoenix traveled north to take on the 3-0 Huskies of MCI under the lights, in front of a large homecoming crowd. The first quarter saw the Huskies force Hyde to a 3 and out, then at the 8:27 mark, # 7 Josh Buker dove 7 yards for the touchdown capping a 9 play – 65 yard drive. Twenty seconds later, Shemar Jack ’16 quieted the crowd as he returned the kickoff 77 yards to tie the game at 6. Two minutes later Huskie captain #2 Alex Bertrand rambled 6 yards to put MCI on top 14 – 6.
The second quarter saw both teams put up a stiff defense with Hyde’s Devon Stanford ’16 (9 tackles) shuffling from D-End to Linebacker (and a stint at fullback) and with Shemar Jack ’16 (15 tackles) and Jake Durkin ’16 (10 tackles) stuffing the potent MCI running game. The teams went into half time with MCI leading 14 – 6. The 3rd quarter is why we should not have long halftimes.
MCI took the kick off to their 45 yard line and 5 plays later punched in for the score to push the lead to 21 – 6, behind the running of #24 Willie Moss (189 yards on the night). Hyde went 3 and out. MCI returned another 5 play 50 yard drive to further the lead to 28 – 6 with 6 minutes to go in the third quarter. Hyde was intercepted by #7 on the 20 yard line. On the next play MCI’s #7 Josh Buker sprinted 55 yards for his 2nd score of the night to widen the gap to 34 – 6 as the third period closed.
Hyde opened the fourth quarter deep in its zone, when Jordan Bushey ’16 burst through the line and out-sprinted the MCI defenders 84 yards for the 2nd Hyde score. The 12 – 34 score would hold for the remainder of the game as both teams used the time to give younger players experience.
