Hyde School – 3
St. Andrew’s School – 1

The Hyde School Girls Varsity Soccer Team improved to 2–0 on the season with a win over St. Andrew’s School of Barrington, RI.  The Phoenix showed great composure, ball movement, and improved team chemistry to earn a second consecutive victory.

Less than 90 seconds into the game, senior captain Jill Tolman ’16 moved the ball through the midfield, taking space up the right flank.  With her teammates’ off-ball movement creating great holes in the St. Andrew’s defense, Tolman found the back of the net to give the Phoenix and early lead.  The first half would see Hyde continue to dominate play, possessing the ball and cohering as a team.  Tolman was assisted in the midfield with great play from Allison Grover ’17, while Lilli Allen ’17 showed great tactical contribution in the offense.

The second half saw Hyde continue to control the scoreboard, though the play on the field was much more even.  Sweeper and captain Kelsey Talbutt ’16 led the Phoenix from the back, consistently controlling the pace of play as the general on the field.  Talbutt was helped by strong defensive play from Merrill Truluck ’18 and Cherry Weng ’17, both of whom shut down any strong St. Andrew’s threats on the Hyde goal.  Twelve minutes into the second half, Alex Bassinger ’17 collected a well-placed free kick from Emma Levensohn ’17, beating the keeper to give Hyde a 2 goal advantage.  With ten minutes to go in the game, Brooke Clement ’19 played a great through ball to Allen, dishing a perfect pass to Levensohn, who capitalized to give the Phoenix a three goal lead.  Minutes later, St. Andrew’s took advantage of the only sloppy Hyde defense of the day, robbing goalie Diamond Brown ’16 (8 saves) of a shutout.

Overall, the Phoenix were solid in ball movement and tactically sound.  The team looks to build on this solid season start, taking on reigning MAISAD champs, Gould Academy, this Wednesday, September 23, at Gould.
