On Wednesday, the Hyde JV boys soccer team traveled to Poland Maine in a non-league tilt. The Phoenix played a highly impressive game and earned their first September win in 4+ years with a 4-1 victory.
Hitting the road can be a challenge; Long rides, smelly cleats and Coach Begly’s alternative music. This was the first step and the lads overcame these odds as we arrived in Poland, Maine on time and ready for action. Despite driving past the locker room to change in, the Phoenix took the field and came out of the gates extremely strong. Senior captain Louis Liu scored the first Phoenix goal and we were ahead early on the road. This provided a great deal of confidence. In the 22nd minute, Junior striker Taddel Tuo scored his second goal of the season on a beautiful chip past the keeper. Intentional? I am not sure but it was certainly a GOALAZOOO. 2-0 Phoenix. Unfortunately the home side were able to score on an equally impressive goal at the end of 45. How would the Phoenix respond?
In easily the best moment of the season, the Phoenix showed a willingness to attack in the second half. The return of the dynamic Sailor “Wheels” Xu gave the Phoenix a different look and Xu scored on a breakaway early in the second. Junior John Westmoreland also performed extremely well in his first game, showing excellent pace and a willingness to hold the ball at the striker position. The cherry on top was a solid goal off the post by improving midfielder Se Jun Kim. As the final whistle blew, the Phoenix walked off the field happy with a 4-1 victory.
Often, the goals get all the attention. However, the true heroes of today’s game were the backline of defense; Sophomore Wells Lawson, Junior Bernard He and senior captain Randy La Vea. Great work fellas.
