First Hyde Victory of the Year!
HYDE GVS- 4
PINE TREE ACADEMY GVS- 0
The Hyde Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team started off their fall season with a victory against Pine Tree Academy in Freeport. They also earned the first Hyde victory for the year! The girls have worked hard through their preseason and first week of practice to improve their conditioning, touch, and what it means to work together as a team.
From the starting whistle Hyde settled right in and applied aggressive pressure on Pine Tree’s defense. 4 minutes in Alex Bassinger ‘17 had a nice shot outside the 18 yard box to give Hyde an early lead. Hyde continued to maintain possession in their defensive third and at the 20 minute mark Emma Levensohn ’17 one-timed a shot from 40 yards out and played a nice lob over the Pine Tree keeper to put Hyde up 2-0. Nearly 10 minutes later, Freshman Brooke Clement capitalized off a scramble in the 18 placing a nice shot wide and into the back of PTA’s net. Although up by 3, Hyde was still goal hungry and worked the ball well through the midfield and up to their strikers who tested PTA’s defense. 6 minutes left to play in the first half and Hyde was awarded a penalty kick after a handball in the box. Senior Jill Tolman buried the ball off a nice, composed penalty shot for her first goal of the season.
In the second half the girls focused on picking up the pace of their possession game and looked to play the ball wide to their outside midfielders for some nice crosses into the box. Although it was a scoreless half, the girls played with focus and determination and looked to utilize each player on the field.
Goal Keeper Diamond Brown ’16 earned her first shutout and has her defensive line specifically sweeper Kelsey Talbutt ’16, to thank for working to shut down PTA’s offensive opportunities. It was a great first showing for GVS and really showcased their potential for their 2016 fall season.
